THE FIRST COMPANY TO PROVIDE ENTERPRISE SOFTWARE TO THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY CELEBRATES ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY Brentwood, Tennessee — April 7, 2009 It was 1969, a year of innovation. In July, Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. The interstate highway system continued to unfurl. In September, Innovative Computing Corporation opened for business. This week, Innovative celebrates its auspicious beginnings as it hosts its annual user's conference in Nashville, TN and commemorates its 40th anniversary. The original offering of trucking software was delivered on IBM Mainframe Computers in what was then called a "service bureau." The term "computing power," although somewhat of a misnomer compared to the power delivered by today's IBM Power™ Systems with the IBM i*, was exciting and new. Microsoft didn't exist. Pay phones were the standard for remote communication and the basis for driver "check calls." Innovative IES® began in the late 1970s with the release of the IBM System 34 "minicomputer." The release of the AS/400 (predecessor of today's Power Systems) in 1988 heralded a period of intense growth for the Company as truckload carriers in North America adopted the "400" as a de facto standard. "Innovative has seen its share of changes in technology and the industry," said Innovative President, Ernie Betancourt. "Staying on the leading edge has remained a challenge that we have been proud to accept and that we look forward to meeting long into the future." In the 1990s, the interstate highway system was completed, and the number of trucking companies continued to grow. Innovative tried to make the transition from a small, entrepreneurial company to become part of a large corporation, which ultimately threatened its viability. Fortunately, Innovative was purchased by a group of investors in the late 1990s, and a new era began. While a significant interest was held by a large manufacturing corporation, the management team began to change. Ernie Betancourt took over as President, and a paradigm shift began within the company. New ideas and strategies were embraced. In 1999, Innovative reached out to small trucking companies when it launched its software as a service over the Internet with products that later became known as Innovative Access® and Innovative Access Plus®. The smaller customers taught Innovative a lot about systems management and customer service, more than even Innovative thought possible. In March 2001, Betancourt led a management buyout of Innovative Computing Corporation, and the company streamlined its focus on profitability and efficiency for its customers.
In 2009, as Innovative reflects on its history, its future shines bright. The first company to provide enterprise software for trucking companies and the first to offer its services via the Internet, Innovative now provides software to 75% of the most profitable truckload carriers in the country. And as Innovative celebrates its 40th anniversary, it marks other significant milestones:
